Chloe and Moe Nordlander-Notkin of Rad Ritual and The CBD Bar are truly spearheading the CBD movement here in Pittsburgh, and singing from the rooftops of the importance and benefits of CBD. The team opened up their holistic wellness and beauty shop, along with The CBD Bar in November of 2016 in Lawrenceville, before moving their storefront to Shadyside late last year.
Chloe and Moe opened The CBD Bar for three reasons: education, comfortability and belief. Education because there is a lot of misinformation out there and knowledge is power. Comfortability because there was no one like them in town (yet) -- The CBD bar is where people can come and get their CBD while feeling comfortable to ask questions about the products. And belief because they truly believe in their products and have seen first hand how effective they can be.
As a native Shadyside resident, the Rad Ritual storefront caught my eye as a new addition to the neighborhood and I have been dying to go in and check it out. I was lucky enough to get to sit down with Chloe, the owner of the store, and find a little more about the store and her vision behind it as well as lots of non-toxic holistic products!
What was your mission behind Rad Ritual?
I had this goal of creating a destination for all non-toxic, holistic lifestyles. Started with a minimum approach with just make up and some skincare, and now it’s grown into a wide lifestyle spot for people to switch over, not just cosmetically, but a total life change.
What is your favorite product in the store?
One item is our Lovability condom packs. Lovability’s whole mission is to have this product that women feel comfortable purchasing and carrying as well as the condoms being vegan and synthetic free. They’re super discrete and come in these cute little tins that people think they’re lip balm or salve. These are the kind of brands and products that I like to work with and sell because they have a purpose and a mission for making a difference. I can’t pick an official favorite because there are so many different things in the store that I love, but I would say they’re definitely up there because they’re empowering and you are doing something good for your body.
What is the CBD bar?
That is our newest addition to Rad Ritual. CBD is an alternative medicine that is being used to replace or to ease the negative side effects of traditional pharmaceuticals, like really harsh cancer treatments. There are a lot of misconceptions and politics around it, but we’ve tried to keep that as separate as we can and provide the best product that we can to people. We see a range of CBD patients and clients from parents who are treating their kids who have anything from autism or epilepsy, and also diabetes and cancer patients. CBD is an extremely healing and has amazing benefits like being anti-anxiety and therefore anti psychotic, and can help people with panic or anxiety disorders.
It seems that Rad Ritual keeps expanding to new categories of all natural items. What new things have you started bringing into the store?
We recently partnered with Planet Hemp, which is a local clothing company that does all-organic cotton and hemp blend, and also some hand made pieces by some local creators. You don’t really think about clothing being toxic but a lot of the cotton and dyes have chemicals and pesticides that are absorbed into your skin when you wear it. It’s the same as the chemicals that are in skincare or make up. We really want to open people’s eyes to all the ways and things they can switch to make a healthier lifestyle and show people how easy it is!
What is one thing that you wish people who were cautious or afraid to switch to non-toxic and holistic products knew?
I wish people had an understanding of how impactful these ingredients are. The way I like to explain it to people is that you wouldn’t willingly eat these ingredients that are in makeup or skincare, so why would you put it on your body? They get absorbed into your system the same way. Unfortunately there is no regulation on industry and it’s the wild wild west where they can pretty much do whatever they want. Also there’s a misconception that all natural means low performance or have a specific look or quality, so we’ve been trying to provide products that would rival things that someone would get at like Sephora or other places to make the switch easier and to get rid of the stigma of all natural products.
What would you say to someone who is worried about the price difference?
I have managed to stock pretty comparable options, and a lot of times get people who are surprised in a positive way that our products aren’t as high as they think. There also aren’t any fillers or chemicals, which is the expensive side of things. Also our products are made small batch and in the states so that allows to keep pricing pretty low as well. Our price points actually are better than most mainstream brands, also since it’s all natural ingredients you don’t have to use as much and therefore use less and the product in turn lasts longer.
What is one thing that you wish people would stop using?
I think the worse offender would be lipstick, especially certain shades that have horrible ingredients. There’s some statistic that women consume like twenty pounds of lipstick per year, and that makes it the worst offender. I feel like lipstick can change your whole look, and your mood, and now there’s so many great options with shades and formulas in natural lipsticks that there are more equivalent shades to the toxic brands. Now you don’t have to feel bad about eating your lipstick! The other one would probably be deodorant.
What do you wish people would know about switching to a holistic nontoxic lifestyle?
It doesn’t need to be a huge overhaul at once. You can swap one lipstick shade for a toxic one and then move slowly on towards making more switches instead of tossing everything toxic in your life and making this a stressful process.
What else is new for Rad Ritual? TONS! A few weeks ago, Chloe teamed up with Chelsea of Whiskey Moon Boutique on the Southside for a special line of CBD products. The first run of product includes 3 oils, 3 creams 1 pain/recovery balm and a face mist. The products are formulated is to remain very multi-use and simplified, with the best ingredients. Everything in the skincare range is infused with potent, therapeutic amounts of nano-available CBD, which means it actually fully absorbs into the body quickly.
The team behind RadRitual also rolled out a line of CBD inspired merchandise. The line includes shirts with sayings "CBD Cures" with a list of the benefits, "Cannabis is the New Kale" + more. The line of merch was released to help spread awareness of the healing benefits of CBD. All products are available for purchase in the RadRitual store, located at 5823 Ellsworth Avenue in Shadyside.
I’m a notorious lipstick junkie and actually was wearing my signature red during our interview. As I’m sure I eat much more than twenty pounds of lipstick a year (yuck) I ended up trying to look for a natural red shade. This Erin’s faces brand Chloe has at Rad Ritual I am OBSESSED with.
I highly suggest paying Rad Ritual a visit, scheduling an energy healing session with Chloe, and taking a look around, even if it’s just to check it out because the store itself has such a calming good vibe the second you walk in. No promises that you won’t want to buy everything in the store because it’s all so cute!
